i was lucky enough to catch these ladies practicing for the evolution art benefit last month. they are brave and fun and talented. you can see more photos on liz's facebook. she goes by wendy whiplash when she performs. makes me wonder what my show name should be...

the portrait machine project by carlo van de roer. a project involving a polaroid aura camera from the 1970's, documenting the unseen, the essence of an individual.
pretty darn cool.

to jumping in

monday's photo day was a complete blast and an incredible learning opportunity for me.

those girls jumped right in. we spent the day wandering around the city, shooting things we found interesting and taking individual portraits of each of the participants. i wish i could share them with you, but we have to keep things confidential.

those girls had such confidence, dressing up in tutus, climbing up trees and jumping on train tracks. very inspiring.

the last image is of me, taken by one of the girls.

this was one of my most powerful experiences i've had yet as a photographer - it's really good to remember how vulnerable it can be on that other end of the lens, it's probably why some of us are drawn to being behind the camera to begin with.

i don't know how i thought to hand over the camera to her, but it worked magically. she was able to tell me what to do and how to capture the image she wanted of herself. once she was happy with this shot, she handed me the camera and we were able to create a whole series of images that i consider some of my favorite portraits i've ever created together with someone.

in other news, we're on a day break from our tour so carson and i spending the day doing not much of anything. that's not really news, i suppose, more of an fyi.

to jumping in, learning and relaxing.

loving how the early evening light takes form in the summer.

i'm pretty proud of some friends in minneapolis this week - these boys released a new album and chris is on tour with stephen kellogg.

sadly, i have not been able to get this song out of my head, but the video is pretty great.

and it's freaking always in style to help kids create and be themselves.

art opening // greetings (in paris!)

i'm over at the creative site booooooom quite a bit, it's never ending source of inspirational awesomeness. it was there i found this collaboration between artists kyle field, nathaniel russell, and alia shawkat (yup, maeby).

they spent time in paris working and preparing for the opening of their show, greetings, which happened on thursday complete with music performed by the artists.

i encourage you to spend some time digging around their sites and their tumblr, where photographer and curator danielle rubi documented the process leading up to the show. these are her beautiful photographs:
